Parents and carers are the biggest influencers on a child’s career decision making. CEC resources are designed to support you in effectively engaging them and encouraging meaningful careers conversations with their children.

Together with , we have have created two short CPD sessions, designed to assist the development of a progressive, targeted and integrated approach. The sessions take just one hour each to complete, meaning you can learn on your lunch!

Planning for Parent/Carer Engagement

Session 1 is aimed at Careers Leaders who are new to role or looking to understand more about how you can engage parents and carers in careers education.

By the end of this session, you will have:

  • Tools, techniques and examples of best practice.
  • Examined any barriers to involvement for your school, special school or college community and how to overcome them.
  • Evaluated current provision and identified opportunities to deepen engagement.
  • Planned a targeted piece of family-friendly careers education that addresses a need in your setting.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ for parental engagement. The Careers & ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Company’s Talking Futures resources can be adapted to suit specific settings and environments. Their short CPD modules are packed full of ideas for events and activities, as well as templates and best-practice examples.

Developing and Embedding a Whole-InstitutionÌýStrategic Approach

If you are a more experienced Careers Leader, or an education leader with responsibility for careers education in your institution, you may benefit from starting with session 2.

Session 2 explores how creating an institution-wide approach to careers through strategic planning can have a deeper impact on learners and their parents/carers.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand what effective strategic and embedded parent and carer engagement looks like, and the difference it can make to learners.
  • Identify relevant staff and the roles they can play, and support them to integrate objectives for ‘PE in careers education’ into their own practice/provision.
  • Identify priority groups based on local data/evidence and ensure parent/carer engagement activities are targeted to meet the needs of these groups.
  • Develop a progressive framework of ‘parent/carer engagement in careers education’ objectives across all student cohorts.
  • See a full picture view of the power of family-inclusive careers education.
